When the kiddos were really little, we had a bedtime ritual in which we said good night to the sun, the stars, the moon, all in Italian. We had a special little connection with the universe as we drifted to sleep.
Last night, the sunset, and then the beautiful moon, caught Lala Bug's attention, and then Little Brown Mouse's. They were enamored. So, this morning, on their uncle's birthday(!), I shared with them that tonight, the earth would align just perfectly to create a lunar eclipse, and that this time, our geography and time zone would align too. We just had to hope for the weather.
Tonight, to start, we couldn't see anything, but just as all the neighbors wandered back indoors, the single stretch of clouds that covered the moon, passed, and there it was. A full lunar eclipse, a blood moon. (Or a blood orange moon, as the kiddos called it.)
It was incredible. They sang to the moon and then we all took a moment of quiet, to simply soak in how special what we were seeing was. I wish we could have had Uncle S with us to see it in earthly lunar birthday celebration.
