January 19, 2016

Today was a wonderful day. It's a Tuesday and coming out of winter break, we hit the ground running with too many activities. Some won't continue for long, but the wildness of our schedule has left Little Brown Mouse crying most mornings about not wanting to go anywhere. (I have finally begun to let go of the fruitless feelings that "other kids have to be up and out early every day, why do mine seem to struggle so much?" We home school and not having to rigidly be places is an advantage if we choose to take it!)

So, this morning, it was pouring. It was wet and cozy and Little Brown Mouse just wanted to stay in his jammies. I said okay. Soccer got canceled and all of sudden, we had all day and no where to be. And do you know what happened?

Magic.

Today, we were all happy, we all flowed in and out of activities (rhythm!), no one got too hungry or too tired or too overdone. We had so many more roses than thorns. And we did some amazing learning. Progress!

Today, we listened to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech again, by request of the kids. We talked about it more. We read a little more about him. We talked about Malala and how her story is related. (My kids are aware of and able to make additional connections thanks to a couple of Sparkle Stories they heard.) We read a book on changing bodies and reproduction. We talked a lot about that. We read a book about blood in the human body. (We have been doing some human body learning in part because of activities with our charter school.) We looked at blood and other slides under the microscope. We did math, we sewed, and the kids even spotted learning activities in our cupboard and with no prompting, did some work on their own. (A mapping activity for Little Brown Mouse and a reading/note taking/comprehension activity for Lala Bug.)

We ate, we played, we went outside, we cooked, and there was very little bickering.

It was a lovely day.

  1. We tried to watch the "I have a dream" speech on you tube, but it wouldn't play. Either bad country connection or too many people watching it. Did you like the Sparkle Story? We have a couple of books with MLK info, so we resorted to reading and talking a little about him that way.

    1. We did enjoy it, yes. Did your boys listen to it? Right now, you can get a free 15 day trial of their streaming site. So many good stories!

  2. Outside activities, so fun, but so exhausting. It is always wonderful to have home days.
